Junrey Balawing of the Philippines, 25, was named the world's shortest living man in September 2015. He is only 59.9 cm (1 ft 11.58 in) tall.
While it's the most extreme example, it's part of a larger scientific phenomenon: Filipinos are among the smallest people on earth.
INSIDER has ranked average height data from a medical database operated by usCollaboration on NCD risk factors, a project associated with Imperial College London.

The average Honduran woman is 5.056 inches (153.84 cm) tall.
1. Timor-Leste — 155.47cm (5 feet 1.28 inches) People on the Southeast Asian island of Timor are an average 155.47cm (5 feet 1.28 inches) tall. The average Timorese man is 159.79cm (5 feet 2.90 inches) tall.
At just shy of the five foot three mark, East Timorese men are the shortest in the world. And while they've grown from being just five feet tall in 1896, this progress has not been uniform. East Timorese men actually reached a peak height of five foot and 3.3 inches during the 1960s.
The country with the shortest women is Guatemala, where the average height is 149 cm, while Latvian women are 20 cm taller (at 169 cm). There are also regional variations in the heights of women.
The shortest tribe are the Mbutsi people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an average height of 1.37 m (4 ft 6 in) for men and 1.35 m (4 ft 5 in) for women, with some groups averaging only 1.32 m (4 ft 4 in) for men and 1.24 m (4 ft 1 in) for women.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average age-adjusted height for American men 20 years and older is is 69.1 inches (175.4 cm), or 5 feet 9 inches tall, and the average height of an American female over 20 years of age is 63.5 inches (161.5 cm), or 5' 3.5" tall.
Latvian women are the tallest on the planet, with an average height of 170cm. * The top four tallest countries for men are the Netherlands, Belgium, Estonia and Latvia. The top four tallest countries for women are Latvia, the Netherlands, Estonia and the Czech Republic.
Hawaii is the shortest state, with the lowest average combined height for both males and females at 5'6″. New Mexico follows closely behind as the second shortest state with an average height of 5'6.4″.
At the other end of the spectrum are the top ten countries with the shortest average height, which currently include: Indonesia 62.2 inches. Bolivia 62.9 inches. The Philippines 63.7 inches.

The Netherlands is renowned for its tall population and unsurprisingly the nation has the tallest average height on Earth. The average 19-year-old man stands at 183 cm, while women of the same age are typically 172 cm.
